College of Saint Mary opens its 2016-17 choral season on Oct. 16
The College of Saint Mary Choir will present its first major performance of the season on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. The concert, which will be held in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel on the CSM campus, is free and open to the public.
“The program will cover many different styles,” says CSM Director of Fine Arts Christopher Krampe. “They range from 50’s pop to 16th century sacred choral music.”
The choir, along with music students and faculty will perform diverse, entertaining musical selections from a wide array of genres and world cultures. They include “Sister Act” and “Les Miserables”, as well as music by Renaissance composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina.
Palestrina (1525-1594) was a major composer of secular and sacred music and held many appointments, including maestro di cappella or musical director of the Cappella Giulia, and master of music at the Vatican Basilica. Palestrina’s works are known for their spiritual qualities and technical mastery.
The performance will include several selections that will be taken with the choir on its May 2017 tour to Montego Bay, Jamaica.
