College of Saint Mary to Host Lecture on Artificial Intelligence
OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary Philosophy Department will host a lecture exploring the challenges and opportunities of maintaining human identity and values in the rapidly advancing age of artificial intelligence.
Guest lecturer Joe Vukov, PhD, associate professor of philosophy at Loyola University and author of “Staying Human in an Era of Artificial Intelligence,” will discuss this issue from 4-5:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, in Hill-Macaluso Hall, Room 21. This lecture is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.
New forms of artificial intelligence can write essays, compose poetry, create artwork, and tell jokes. In short, AI can do many of the things we had previously thought only humans could do. In an era of AI, it is therefore more important than ever that we understand ourselves – both what it means to be human and how to act humanely.
This event is part of the Philosophy Program Ethics Lecture series.
