CSM OT Professor Co-authors Clinical Simulation Book

Dr. Maureen Hoppe is a published author. The associate professor of occupational therapy at College of Saint Mary co-authored "Clinical Simulation for Healthcare Professionals," which was recently published. The book provides comprehensive information about commonly used simulation methods, including high and low technology simulations, simulated patients, task trainers, and role play. Also included are step-by-step instructions for how to build simulation experiences in a variety of settings and for various learning and teaching needs. "It's so exciting to see this book in print," Dr. Hoppe said.

Dr. Hoppe presented at the American Occupational Therapy Association Annual Conference in 2015 and connected with other OT educators who were also passionate about the use of clinical simulation as a teaching method to enhance healthcare professions' student preparation for practice. "Working with occupational therapy educators from four different academic institutions to co-author a book on clinical simulation was a great opportunity to contribute to the body of knowledge on this topic,” she said. “I enjoyed sharing expertise with other educators to support best practices for facilitating the development of future healthcare professionals.”

The process of writing the book took more than three years due to the pandemic. However, Dr. Hoppe is hopeful it will make an impact. "Hopefully, this book provides healthcare professionals resources to support clinical simulation best practice, including types, design, implementation, assessment, and appropriate use in education," she said.

Dr. Hoppe has previously published her dissertation, which focused on examining the effectiveness of clinical simulation in occupational therapy fieldwork education. She also co-authored an article, "Clinicians and educators: A partnership in simulation."
