Haring named Director of Athletics at College of Saint Mary
Peter Haze Haring has been named the new Director of Athletics at College of Saint Mary. Haring’s first day in his new position was Monday, June 6.
Haring comes to CSM after serving 11 years as the Director of Athletics at Calumet College of St. Joseph in Hammond, Ind. During his time at CCSJ, he had oversight of 22 intercollegiate sports that competed in the NAIA. He has significant experience with strategic planning, budget planning, fundraising, facility and event management, branding and imaging, staff leadership training and networking with alumni, parents and local community stakeholders. Haring was heavily involved in the construction and fundraising for Calumet’s new athletic center in 2007. When Haring started at Calumet, the Crimson Wave had just six sports and he helped them grow to 22 comprising of over 325 student-athletes. Under his leadership the CCSJ athletic program was a seven-time NAIA Champions of Character institution and finished as a top five institution in 2014-15. The department also maintained a student-athlete cumulative GPA greater than a 3.0 for the past three consecutive years.
He also was an active member of the Chicagoland College Athletic Conference serving as the Assistant Vice-Commissioner/Treasurer, Champions of Character liaison, Committee Chair of the Conduct & Ethics committee along with oversight of the CCAC All-Academic Team honors program. During his 22 years in higher education, Haring has also taught classes in sports management, public speaking and communication over the years.
“I’m excited to announce Peter Haze Haring as the new Athletic Director for College of Saint Mary, as he has a tremendous amount of leadership experience in university athletics,” said Dr. Tara Knudson Carl, vice president for student development at CSM. “Peter is uniquely qualified to build on the success of Flames Athletics.”
Haring will be able to relate well with his staff as he brings plenty of coaching experience to the table. Haring was the CCSJ head men and women’s soccer coach from 2005-2012 and prior to that he coached at Saint Mary’s College (Notre Dame, Ind.), Valparaiso University and Wheeler High School. He also coached and served as director for numerous soccer club organizations.
Knudson Carl said Haring’s experience will be invaluable at an important time for Flames Athletics.
“CSM is poised to further grow its athletic programs and improve facilities as part of the institution’s new strategic plan,” Knudson Carl said. “At this exciting time of planned growth, Peter is just the proven and visionary leader we were seeking to take our athletic program to the next level.”
And that dedication to growing Flames Athletics was appealing to Haring.
“I accepted the position because of the unique opportunity to grow the athletic department and to create an enthusiastic comprehensive experience for the students at CSM,” Haring said. “I’m excited about being in an area like Omaha that supports athletics and looking forward to creating new opportunities for the community to support Flames Athletics.”
Haring has a Bachelor of Science in Communication from St. Joseph’s College and a Master of Science in Recreation, Sport & Tourism from the University of Illinois. He also has a certificate in community leadership from the South Shore Leadership Center. Haring is living in Omaha with his wife Angie and two sons, Andrew and Alec.
