New student lounge supports healthy study habits, connection
OMAHA, Neb. – A new student lounge in Hill Macaluso Hall at College of Saint Mary (CSM) supports healthy study habits, encourages connection and builds community.
The student lounge features a science-themed mural, comfortable seating, a coffee bar, a soda machine, science-themed puzzles, anatomy and physiology study cards, an Evolution of STEM LEGO set and houseplants.
The new space replaces a student lounge that was located on the ground floor of Hill Macaluso Hall, which is home to science labs, a greenhouse and Gross Auditorium. The old student lounge lacked windows and comfortable furniture.
“We knew we needed something more functional and inviting—especially since so many students spend long days in this building,” said Kristofer Czerwiec, director of operations and planning. “Hill Macaluso Hall doesn’t have many classrooms or spaces with natural light, so finding a location with windows was a big priority to support healthy studying, connection and community.”
The new lounge was previously a greenhouse prep room with a bin of worms, pond waders and growth chamber. The transformation brought new life and energy to the room.
“The feedback so far has been really positive,” Czerwiec said. “Several students have shared how much they appreciate having a space with natural light where they can relax, study or just take a break.”
