Watercolorist to Exhibit Work at College of Saint Mary

Monday, October 21, 2024

OMAHA, Neb. – An artist known for his watercolor works, including portraits, landscapes and cityscapes, will display his paintings during a show Nov. 4-Dec. 12 in the Hillmer Art Gallery at College of Saint Mary. The opening reception will be at 5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14.

Telagio Baptista uses various atmospheric painting techniques. The use of a limited palette and negative space strongly influences his paintings. This allows room for his paintings to “breathe,” depending on the subject matter. Baptista tells a story through his paintings, similar to a writer telling a story with words. He believes art is not what he sees but what it makes others see.

Baptista has earned recognition for numerous award-winning watercolor paintings at regional, national and international juried art shows.

“Telagio Baptista’s work exemplifies the incredible quality and attention to detail that we strive to instill in our students here at College of Saint Mary,” said Jeff Spencer, assistant professor of art and gallery director. “His mastery of watercolor not only showcases technical skill but also reinforces the importance of patience, precision, and creativity – key lessons our students are learning daily.”

Baptista’s passion for art began as a youth, winning national awards in high school, a scholarship to the Art Institute and finishing with a BFA at California College of Arts and Crafts. He also worked in numerous leading advertising agencies as an art director and owned and operated a design studio in Hawaii for 20-plus years, winning his share of design awards along his creative path.

Baptista conducts watercolor workshops and exhibits in Nebraska, including at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Gallery 92 in Fremont and Norfolk Arts Center, and the surrounding states.
