College of Saint Mary Names Alexis Sherman Director of Multicultural Initiatives
OMAHA, NEB. – College of Saint Mary has appointed Alexis Sherman to the post of Director of Multicultural Initiatives. An expert in educational advancement and support, Sherman brings with her more than 15 years of experience in multicultural educational leadership roles and active student-centered programs.
“Alexis is filling an important role on our campus as we continue to build global outreach, celebrate cultures, and encourage all women to realize their potential,” said College of Saint Mary President Dr. Maryanne Stevens, RSM. “Her heart for service and deep experience in multicultural connectivity will play an integral part in strengthening our inclusive community at College of Saint Mary.”
Sherman comes to CSM most recently from Chicago’s Roosevelt University, where she served as Acting Director of the Upward Bound Projects – a million-dollar initiative focused on leading low income, first generation high school students. As the initiative’s director, she developed a range of programs built to support and engage high school students through college preparation, counseling opportunities, academic instruction, and overall cultural enrichment. Additionally, after securing nearly $30,000 in grant funding, she created, implemented, and coordinated a unique three-year program to educate urban youth on obtaining environmental careers. While at Roosevelt University she also promoted individual character growth and encouragement as the leader of a range of additional support programs, including early academic warning systems programs, after-school academic programs, career exploration opportunities, the Student Success Organization, and the National College Visit Program.
Prior to her role at Roosevelt, she served as Academic Advisor for Columbus State Community College’s TRIO Student Support Services program. As the group’s co-lead, she provided intensive advising, support, scholarship guidance, and tutoring to nearly 200 first generation and low-income college students. She has also spent time in leadership roles for college athletes, coordinating support and promoting academic progress at both University of California-Davis and University of Virginia.
At College of Saint Mary, Sherman will work to realize the college’s strategic vision for an inclusive campus, making it a priority to inspire connectivity and global citizenship within a diverse college community. In the newly formed position, which is a direct response to College of Saint Mary’s Strategic Plan 2021, Sherman will tap into her expertise to oversee creation, assessment, and promotion of multiculturalism for institutional and educational advancement.
Sherman studied English and Communication Studies at the University of Nebraska and earned her master’s degree in Higher Education Administration at The Ohio State University.
