An Ode to Boredom: CSM hosts philosophy lecture on Oct. 3
OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary (CSM) will host Dr. Brandon Boesch, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Morningside College, in an ethics lecture sponsored by the CSM philosophy program on Thursday, October 3rd. Boesch will present “An Ode to Boredom.”
“We are very excited to host Dr. Boesch for the philosophy program ethics lecture,” said Dr. Celeste Harvey, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at CSM.
Boesch’s presentation, “An Ode to Boredom,” focuses on how individuals’ lack of boredom due to the prevalence of technology is actually hurting us and our society. He argues that boredom should be embraced and cultivated in the right way in order to pursue the goods of love, friendship, learning, and beauty in our lives.
“For most of us, our phones are an ever-present part of our daily lives. It’s easy to take that for granted and not give it very much thought,” explains Harvey. “I think Boesch is going to help us be a lot more thoughtful about our phones, about what we want out of life, and whether the way we sometimes use our phones is really to our benefit.”
Boesch has served as Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Morningside College since 2018. He specializes in the philosophy of science and applied ethics and has published papers in academic journals and books, including Science & Education.
The lecture will take place at a Warde Conference Center from 4 – 5:30 p.m. on October 3rd. A dessert reception will follow. This event is free and open to the public.
